Clear ceramic braces can give you a better alternative to straighten your teeth than metal braces.
There are multiple advantages and disadvantages to ceramic braces, and we will answer the most asked questions here.
Ceramic braces are made from a transparent composite type material and are often referred to as “clear braces” or “tooth-colored braces.”
They move the teeth in the same fashion as metal braces. Clear braces use wires and ligature ties to guide the teeth into proper position.
The advantages of clear ceramic braces are:
The clear look: Ceramic braces are more esthetic, and frequently patients will go weeks before people know they have braces.
Easier than Invisalign: There is no taking on and off the trays, and therefore braces are easier to wear than Invisalign.
Comfort: Patients often state that clear braces are very comfortable.
There are also many disadvantages to clear braces, such as:
They may break easier than metal braces.
Clear braces cost more than metal braces.
The composite glue that holds the brackets and the clear ligature ties may turn yellow.
It may be more challenging to clean around the clear braces.
There is no single answer for everyone. If an adult is choosing between clear braces and Invisalign, it is always better to choose clear braces.
Invisalign takes a lot of work, and unless you have researched Invisalign and are prepared for the work, you may get tired of taking on and off the clear aligners.
If an adolescent is trying to choose, I will guide them towards metal braces because they will not discolor and are a little stronger.

Similar to metal braces, most orthodontic treatments are 18-24 months long. Depending on the difficulty of the case, it may be less time or more.
Clear ceramic braces move your teeth at a similar rate to metal braces. There is very little treatment time difference between the two options.
Q: Is it possible to discolor clear braces?
A: No and Yes. When the brackets get stained, it is most often due to the composite holding the brackets in place, not the actual clear braces themselves. The stains may also be from the clear ligature ties that get changed at every visit.
Q: Is it harder to remove clear or metal braces?
A: Clear braces are harder to remove. Clear braces have come a long way, but they are still more challenging to remove than metal braces and tend to shatter when removing.
Q: Will my treatment be longer with clear braces?
A: No. Although sometimes the clear braces are more prominent, making it more challenging to align some teeth, the overall treatment time is very similar.
